Gary Mannion

My main musical influences are Graeme Conners, Norma Murphy, John Williamson, Troy Casser Daly, the Eagles and Credence Clearwater Revival.

I have been playing Music and singing since I was 14, that's a bloody long time ago now, I just love it. I grew up in a small country town called Pekina, in the north of South Australia about where the Flinders Rangers actually start. My parents come off the land and actually still run the family farm. My father spent many years shearing throughout most of Australia. He used to travel from shed to shed on an Arial 500 motorbike. What a time he had. So you can see I have a strong connection with the land and Bush and its people. I love listening to the old timers and share their experiences. I draw a lot of inspiration from them and I think this is expressed through my music.

I left home at the age of 16 and started an apprenticeship as a diesel fitter with the railways in Pt Augusta I have lived there ever since 30 yrs ago. In my earlier days I spent much of my time on the Nullarbor and on the old Ghan railway lines, looking back this was a wonderful experience. My guitar was a constant companion. I often draw on these experiences when writing or performing. I am currently employed by Transfield Services as their Plant and Equipment Coordinator. This job takes up most of my time and sees me travel throughout Australia, even New Zealand on a regular basis.

I have been performing for many years and regularly perform at the Hannaville Hotel Pt Augusta the North Star Hotel at Melrose, the Food and Wine Festival at Mt View Wines and the Pt Augusta and Southern Flinders areas in general. I have sung at the Dawn service on Anzac Day for the last 3 yrs this experience is very moving. I also sing and perform for the aged care residents in nursing homes thru out the Northern Areas. I feel this is away of giving these people something back for what they have done for us. They really enjoy the shows.
